2004 Toyota Prius ABS Light Reset

The following guide will show you how to reset the abs warning light on the 2004 Toyota Prius.

If you see the letters “ABS” appear in the instrument cluster then your Prius has most likely detected a fault behind the system that alternates the brakes to reduce skidding.

It can be dangerous to drive with this warning light active as your brakes may not work at all.

Once you have the problem fixed within the ABS system you may find that the warning light is still present, doing the following will disable the warning:

  1. Using a spare piece of wire, connect the terminals on the OBD-II socket as shown in the diagram below (connecting terminals 4 and 13).
  2. Turn your Prius on BUT do not start the engine – to do this you must turn the power ON but not depress the brake pedal at the same time.
  3. Wait for the ABS warning light to blink twice and then switch the car OFF again.
  4. Now start the car along with the engine (by pushing down on the brake pedal at the same time you turn the power ON).
  5. Within 5 seconds of the car starting, you need to press the brake pedal repeatedly 8 times.
  6. If you have done it correctly then the ABS warning light should begin to flash.
  7. Turn your Prius OFF completely and remove the jumper you made for the ODB-II port.
  8. When you start the car next the ABS warning light should be back to normal.
